Severe convective storms over Central Europe, cloud streets over Denmark and Northern Germany and contrails over the Mediterranean Sea (13 June 2003)

In the first half of June 2003, in particular on 5, 8 and 13 June, severe convective storms caused considerble damage in Central Europe, in particular, Germany (5 and 8 June), The Netherlands (8 June), Czech Republic (13 June). Nowcasting (very short range forecasting) of these severe convective storms is improved with information on cloud particle size, as provided by the NIR1.6 and IR3.9 channels on MSG. In addition to cloud optical depth and cloud top temperatures, MSG observes several cloud microphysical parameters.

Clouds streets over Denmark and Northern Germany.
